TEACHER BIO
My name is Georgene Colovos. I am a second-generation Greek-American from Salt Lake City, Utah. Both my grandparents immigrated from Greece to the United States and ended up in Utah. The Greek word for grandfather is papou and the Greek word for grandmother is yiayia.
My maternal grandparents came to Utah from Argos, Greece. Argos is in the Peloponnese Region of Greece. My papou Poulos' name was John Kyriakopoulos and my yiayia's name was Chrisoula Tsangos Kyriakopoulou. They changed their name from Kyriakopoulos to Poulos when they got to Ellis Island in New York.
My paternal grandparents came to Utah from a little village near Lamia, Greece called Omvriaki. Lamia is in the Central Region of Greece. My papou's name was Gust Kolovos and my yiayia's name was Mae Kakkos Kolovou. The Greek alphabet only has one /k/ sound so they write those words with the Greek letter, kappa. Somewhere along the way in America, the letter changed to the letter 'c' for the /k/ sound in their name.
I was named after my mother's bachelor uncle, George Poulos; her sibling, George; and my father's sibling, George, who was killed in the Philippines during WW1. Your given name is traditionally handed down from grandparents, since I am child number four in my family, the third daughter, I ended up with the name from other than a grandparent, but still an important family member: uncle, and brother from both parents.
